How difficult is it to learn Medical Coding?
RN’s and LPN’s already have a working knowledge of terminology and anatomy.  They also work in the medical industry and can accelerate the training by focusing only on the coding aspect of the program.  Therefore, learning medical coding is not difficult since it is just a matter of learning the codes and terminology.

What is received with completion of the program?

After completion the student receives a Certificate of Completion.  Certification as a Medical Coder/Biller from the AAPC or AHIMA is recommended but not required for employment.   This is an exam administered at a testing center and upon successful completion, you receive certification.  There are also various certification exams that do not require a fee.

Why is now a better time than any to become a Medical Coder?

It’s the perfect time because 1996 updates to the HIPAA regulations created national standards for medical billing and encouraged electronic billing.  Also, the Office of the Inspector General (the OIG) and Managed Care Plans are watching physicians and care facilities very closely to ensure compliance to proper coding and billing methods.  Currently, monthly chart auditing is voluntary (unless you have been audited), but it’s only a matter of time before it becomes MANDATORY!
